Pew Change August 2011
The pews are now back to their normal position but you can
read below what we did.
Questionnaires are available in church or by contacting us to let
us know what you thought of this year's layout.
What's happening?
- For the four weeks of August we will change the normal
layout of the pews in church for a trial period.
Why do we do this?
- Twice previously we tried a different arrangement of the
pews during the summer months as an experiment. After
the 2006 and 2009 trial a number of comments were
made (positive and negative) and many people asked if
we could retry the pew change this summer.
- The way a church building is furnished says a lot about
how we understand worship and liturgy and how we
understand our relationship with God. Over the years the
Christian Church has developed a number of different
church layouts. There is a danger that we become too
comfortable in our physical environment that we do not
think about what we are doing and why.
- Changing the layout of the church affects the way we
worship. With the pews in a different layout we will rethink
what we are doing, why we are doing it and we will
experience the Eucharist in a different way.
- This is only a temporary change! We will change back to
our usual layout in September.
What is the new layout?
- The chosen layout this year sees the altar moved to the
centre of the nave space. The pews will be arranged on
six sides of the altar in groups of three.
