...is an annual service giving thanks for our loved ones. Unlike our All Souls' Eucharist in November, this short service is more informal and reflective and allows for those who don't normally come to church to come and share their memories of their loved with others.
The date for the next service in 2011 has not been decided yet. Please visit again for more details.
All Souls': November Remembering We celebrate All Souls' Day at St Agnes' with a special service. You can find out more about All Souls' day services at St Agnes' here. If you would like the name of someone who has died to be remembered at this special Eucharist please contact the parish priest. You will be most welcome at this service.
At other times we remember the departed in our prayers.
Praying with the Church ... When someone we love dies we do not forget them. We continue to think about the times we spent with them, we remember their joys and sorrows, we remember them with love.
As Christians who believe in the joy of heaven we know that death is not the end. We believe that those who die in the faith and love of Christ are alive together with Christ for ever. The Church remembers the dead in prayer.
The church has traditionally used candles as symbols of prayer. In St Agnes' church there are two ways of remembering people in our prayers with candles.
The Sanctuary lamp Above the Tabernacle which houses the Blessed Sacrament a light burns constantly reminding us of Christ's abiding presence with us in the form of his precious Body and Blood of the Eucharist. Many people find it helpful to sponsor this perpetual light in memory of a loved one. The lamp - which burns for seven days from Sunday to Sunday may be sponsored for £3 a week. The name of the Soul remembered or the intention of our prayer is displayed at the entrance to the Sacrament chapel. For more details please contact the parish priest.
The Votive Stand Many people find it helpful to light a candle as a symbol of the prayer. Even after a words and thoughts have ended the candle remains as a symbol of the enduring presence of Christ in our lives. There are two candle stands in St Agnes' church - one in front of the icon of the crucified Christ and one near the statue of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin. Donations for these candles are 15p and they can be lit at any time when the church is open.
