Bishop Nigel visits St Agnes’ on his Parish Pilgrimage
On Monday 16th June 2008 the Bishop of Manchester visited St Agnes as part of
his pilgrimage around the Diocese.

- You can read the presentation of Our Story here. This was used during
the pilgrimage service and the accompanying slide show can be viewed here.

Below is a copy of the welcome and introduction letter before the event.
We are looking forward to Bishop Nigel’s visit to the parish on Monday 16th June
and lots of people are involved with the preparations - invitations to the events,
hospitality at the reception and arrangements for the worship. Our thanks to all of
them.
Over 3-4 years the Bishop is undertaking a pilgrimage to all 335 churches in the
Diocese of Manchester. Entitled Run the Race his journey encourages and
supports the parishes in their life and work.
The Bishop brings with him as a visual aid the Commonwealth Games baton,
symbolising the race to which the author of the Letter to the Hebrews likens the
Christian life. We are to run this race with persistence and patience, remembering
that it is, so to speak a relay race. Having ourselves received the gift of faith we
are called to pass on and share the faith, hope and love of the gospel in today’s
world and for succeeding generations.
Encouraging us in our mission and worship is the sole purpose of the Bishop’s visit
and he does this in a particularly Anglican way helping parishes to celebrate their
community opportunities and responsibilities.
After prayers in church at 4pm - to which everyone is welcome - the Bishop will
be with Fr Stephen sharing pastoral ministry in the parish. We plan to local
mosques and businesses in the programme for this.
Then at 6pm the PCC will be hosting a reception for community guests – very
many people who sustain the daily life of our community through education,
voluntary work, neighbourhood care, business, leisure and local government. It
will be a chance for the Bishop to hear people’s stories and for us all both to
affirm our community links and to make fresh ones.
The visit ends with a service of celebration in church at 7pm. Everyone is invited
and there will be a warm welcome those attending the community reception.
During the service we have a 10 minute slot to tell something of our story at St
Agnes’ and after the Bishop’s address there is a time of personal rededication as
he invites everyone for a blessing and anointing with holy oil. The Bishop
commissions us to play our part taking forward the work of the Kingdom in this
place and assures of God’s presence and strength.
So we look forward to welcoming the Bishop and many other guests. We trust it
will be a special day of thanksgiving and hope as we catch a fresh vision of God’s
love for the whole creation.
