Celebrating the love of Christ in Longsight

Inner City Manchester ...

The parish covers a large area about two miles south of Manchester city centre along the A6
Stockport Road. It stretches from the district shopping centre of Longsight down towards
Levenshulme and has a population of over 12,500.

We are part of the Diocese of Manchester in the Church of England (Anglican/Episcopalian)
and in the Deanery of Ardwick.

The parish was created in October 2001 by the joining of the Parish of St Agnes' Birch to the
Parish of St John with St Cyprian Longsight. The two previous parishes had worked together
for a number of years.

There is one church - St Agnes' Parish Church - on Slade Lane.

A diversity of cultures and faiths ...

The benefice covers an inner city area with a mixture of different races, cultures, and faiths - a
significant portion of the local people are Muslim. The ethnic mix of the parish presents many
interesting and exciting challenges to the church and the congregation.

There are four schools - one of which, St Agnes Church School is attended mainly by Muslim
children. This is an important point of contact between the Christian and Islamic faiths and
presents opportunities for inter-faith outreach work. The congregation is ethnically mixed,
drawing members from the African, Afro-Caribbean, white and other members of the local
community and we aim to reflect this in our worship.

Working with other churches and the community ...

The Parish of St Agnes is linked with the Parish of Wilmslow
in the Diocese of Chester. We also work closely locally with our
neighbouring parishes: St Luke's Longsight and St Chrysostom's
Victoria Park - click here for their websites. St Agnes' Parish is an active member of Churches
Together in Longsight.

Another contact with the local community is the Community Hall which is part of St Agnes'
church building. It provides a venue for social and educational activities in the local area and
the Hall Management Team is comprised of members of the local community and elected
church representatives.

A PARISH CHURCH

LOCATION

St Agnes Church is situated on the corner of Slade Lane and Hamilton Road (M13).

DESIGN

The church was built in 1884 and designed by Medland and Henry Taylor. The main building
material is brick, with a smooth red facing for details etc, and roofs covered in plain tiles. The
interior is also brick with a yellow glazed brick wainscotting and there is a
dominant roof with a complex timber structure.

The north aisle was separated from the nave in 1987 to form a community hall and the rest of
the church was re-ordered at that time.

WORSHIP SPACE

In 1987 the high altar was moved from its original position in the chancel to its present position
at the east end of the nave. It is free standing with seats for the  servers and choir on either
side.

The chancel area is now the Blessed Sacrament chapel with an informal seating area. The
tabernacle is set in the east wall of this chapel and is visible from the whole church. On the
right of the Sacrament Chapel is a small prayer area with a statue of Our Lady with the infant
Jesus given to the church by the people of St Joseph's Catholic church Longsight.

A statue of St John the Evangelist from St John's church, Longsight, which closed in 1999
stands part way down the nave.

From the chancel arch hangs a large cross and near the steps to the Sacrament chapel is a
votive stand with icons.

PARISH PRIEST

priesthood at Westcott House, Cambridge. He came to St Agnes' as
parish priest in January 2002 before which he was parish priest of
Bryn-Y-Maen in the Diocese of St Asaph, north Wales and previously
assistant curate of Colwyn Bay.

Fr Stephen is available every day except Friday for baptism, banns
of marriage, wedding and other enquiries or if you need to speak to
