St Agnes’ Community Centre was created in 1987 by partitioning off the side aisle of the St Agnes’ Parish Church on Slade Lane, Longsight, Manchester. The funding for the project was provided by Manchester City Council with the proviso that the Centre provide social and recreational facilities for the local community. The Centre has a policy of only accepting user groups of a non-commercial nature. The original agreement provides for this joint church-community use be for 20 years. On March 31st 2007 this agreement finished.
The Parish and the Community Hall worked together on a new constitution and now the Hall is managed by a Parish committee which specifically invited members of the local community to be a part of it.
The Management Committee is made up of the Parish Priest (as Chair) and up to seven other members – three of whom are drawn from the local community and three being appointed by the Parochial Church Council. This church-community mix helps to ensure that the diverse cultural, ethnic and social make-up of the immediate local community is reflected in the Centre’s management team.
The Centre adopted an updated Constitution to ensure that the original aims of the Centre project are maintained and that the Centre is able to cope with the current needs of the local community.
Who we serve…
There are currently a number of regular user groups including children’s groups and play schemes, social groups for the over 50’s, Christian worship and fellowship groups, dance and music groups, health and sport activities and local community action groups. These groups draw members from a number of backgrounds and nationalities including those from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Uganda, Ghana, Mozambique, and the West Indies.
Alongside these regular users the Centre is used by individuals and groups for a number of functions – such as parties, meetings, and community campaigns.
The Future…
The Centre is now used more than at any time in its history and, after nearly 20 years it is in need of some repair and renewal. A program of renewal has begun. The kitchen has been equipped with a new fridge, cooker, microwave and water boilers and kettles. New light-weight folding tables and comfortable chairs have now been bought. A new heating system is being installed.
The management Committee are committed to the original aims of the project and look forward to developing the Centre as a community resource for this part of Longsight.
St Agnes Community Centre is managed by the Community Centre Management Committee - a collaboration between the parish of St Agnes Longsight and local residents. The project was initially funded by Manchester City Council.
