the parish of st agnes longsight

Inner City Manchester ...
The parish covers a large vibrant area about two miles
south of Manchester city centre along the A6 Stockport
Road. It stretches from the district shopping centre of
Longsight down towards Levenshulme, and across from the
neighbouring student areas of Victoria Park and Rusholme
eastwards toward the Belle Vue area. The population is
over 12,500.
We are part of the Diocese of Manchester in the Church
of England (and therefore a member of the
Anglican/Episcopalian Communion). The Parish is in the
Archdeaconry of Manchester and in the Deanery of
Ardwick.
The parish was created in October 2001 by the joining of
the Parish of St Agnes' Birch to the Parish of St John with
St Cyprian Longsight. The two previous parishes had
worked together for a number of years. There is one
church - St Agnes' Parish Church - on Slade Lane.
A diversity of cultures and faiths ...
The benefice covers an inner city area with a mixture of
different races, cultures, and faiths - a significant portion of
the local people are Muslim (44% at the 2001 Census but
estimated at nearly 60% in 2007). The ethnic and religious
mix of the parish presents many interesting and exciting
opportunities for the church and the congregation.
There are four schools - one of which, St Agnes Church
School, is attended mainly by Muslim children. This is an
important point of contact between the Christian and
Islamic faiths and presents opportunities for inter-faith
outreach work. The congregation is ethnically mixed
drawing members from the African, Afro-Caribbean, white
and other members of the local community, and we aim to
reflect this in our worship.
Working with other churches and the
community ...
The Parish of St Agnes is linked with the Parish of
Wilmslow in the Diocese of Chester. We also work closely
locally with our neighbouring parishes: St Luke's Longsight
and St Chrysostom's Victoria Park. St Agnes' Parish works
with other churches and organisations in the local
community.
Another contact with the local community is the
Community Centre which is part of St Agnes' church
building. It provides a venue for social and educational
activities in the local area and the Hall Management Team is
comprised of members of the local community and elected
church representatives.
